www.darlingtontown.co.uk 1998 - 2008

DarlingtonTown.co.uk was created on the 11 th January 1996 and went live 2-years later in January 1998. The website was started when Darlington had very little in the way of an Internet presence, so people could find out about Darlington within a few clicks of their mouse rather than searching the entire Internet for hours.

Who is it for?
The website is for anybody who finds the content interesting and useful. It was built for the people of Darlington but over the years has found people from all over the world using it every day.

Where have we got things right in the town?
Darlington is expanding so fast it’s frightening to see. If you go out for a drive to the outskirts of the town you’ll think you are in another town! New roads, hundreds of new home and businesses are built and set up every day. Industry seems to have realised the true potential Darlington and it’s people have to offer, and are making the most of it. Darlington is probably the best place to live out of all the Towns and Cities if not only in the UK but Europe too. It’s a clean fresh town with lots to give, and people here, who make the most of it, have a great quality of life.

Where have we got to work harder?
We need to be more open and honest. We need to work harder in providing information and seeing that the right information is provided to the right people at the right time. We need to ask people living and working in our collective communities what it is they know would be of great benefit to their local community instead of thinking “we know what’s best in our five year plan” or whatever. We need to talk to our younger generations and put a stop to teenagers having to walk the streets in gangs drinking alcohol sold to them not only by local off-licences, supermarkets and pubs, but provided to them by their very own relations, older friends, guardians or parents, because they have, or believe they have, very little other things to do. We need to remember it’s not the teenager but the way in which society has influenced that teenager. We need to provide better guidance to them. We need to set better standards by the way in which we ourselves act.

What are the issues that face us for the future?
(Street Crime, Drugs, Education, Employment & Training).
More houses being built. Big employers coming to our town. New roads and street lighting. Bigger and better shopping arcades are planned for our town centre. Better ways of keeping our town clean and tidy. More pretty hanging baskets and shrubs and trees. Loads of investment and grants and subsidies being poured into our Council areas. Bigger and better Schools being built with the best of the best. But also more and more of our green fields, schools, yards and playing grounds being eaten up to accommodate this, or sold to raise funds for their provision. Less and less local amenities being provided for and properly maintained. We spend some time and money on park playing equipment for our younger generations, but leave out our teenagers, whose ambition is to redevelop the play equipment’s steel structure. We fail to gain their friendship. We fail to see what’s missing in their needs from society. More people in our communities but less communication. Less faith and trust in all our religions. We have a local Police bobby ‘on the beat’ but not many people know who they are nor do they know their names. We can do much better.
