Butterwick Children's Hospice

Come on Darlington - let's have A Show of Hands

Residents in Darlington are being asked to give a helping hand to an ambitious local fundraising initiative. Butterwick Children's Hospice is running a campaign called 'A Show of Hands' to raise vital funds for children with a life-limiting illness.

The 'Show of Hands' idea originated from this year's Children's Hospice Week theme 'Help is at Hand'. Butterwick Children's Hospice is asking the communities they serve to draw around their hands and send them in. The aim is to have enough hands to stretch the distance between the Butterwick's two Hospices. The 17 mile stretch has created the need for 340,000 hands!

The aim of the campaign is for all whole region to join their hands together to help their local Children's Hospice. Butterwick Children's Hospice provides care to children with a life limiting illness and families across North Yorkshire, Country Durham, Teesside and Wearside.

Nicola Fewell who is the Fundraiser for Darlington, said: "Everyone can get involved with this campaign, it only takes a minute to draw around a hand and if you can manage to draw round your other one too that's even better."

Nicola has from now until the end of Children's Hospice Week on Saturday, 24th September to reach the 17 mile target. All people need to do is draw round their hands, write their name, address and contact details on and send them to the Hospice. Butterwick Hospice is asking participants to make a small donation with the hands to help raise funds for the Children's Hospice.

Nicola said: "Every donation will make a difference to the lives of local children and families in your area. Whatever amount people can give will make a difference - every penny counts. Even if everyone donated just 10p per hand then we would raise well over £30,000. We are appealing to everyone to help us exceed our goal."

The Hospice will be having a 'Show of Hands' to mark the end of Children's Hospice Week. There will also be the opportunity to win prizes as hands will be entered into a prize draw so it's important people include their contact details.

Nicola said: "I'd like to thank the schools and businesses who have already been drawing round their hands but with only eight weeks left to reach our target we're appealing to all Darlington residents and businesses to give us a helping hand and support our campaign."
