Increase the security of your home

The following advice will greatly increase the security of your home and also help police recover property and trace thieves.

Security
Fit a burglar alarm, visible alarms make burglars think twice, and always use it when you are out for long periods of time, day or night.
Leave a light on both upstairs and down when you are out at night, giving the impression that someone is at home. If you are away all night or on holiday, invest in an inexpensive timer switch to turn your lights on and off whilst you are out.
Simple - make your home appear occupied when it isn't by leaving a radio on.
Never leave a spare key in a hiding place under a doormat or in a flowerpot - a thief will look there first.
Leave a spare key with a neighbour if necessary.

What can we do?
Remember 70% of all house burglaries occur at the rear.
Make sure your fencing is secure.
Fit lockable gates to restrict rear access.
Use low wattage lighting to illuminate your rear garden.
Have a good look at your back door, a five lever mortice lock to BS 3621 will deter most burglars.
Remember we are mainly dealing with opportunists.
Fit window locks to all accessible opening Windows, and use them (in 30% of all burglaries - entry is via an open window or door.
Record an inventory of valuable items, post code, security mark and photograph valuables or antiques.
Home watch can be very effective in the fight against crime.
