Limit Access to Outsiders
DSL and cable modem connections are often "always on"
connections that use static Internet Protocol (IP) addressing.
That means that as long as your computer is turned on, it is
always connected to the Internet at the same IP address. Without
proper security measures, someone who has that IP address could
view information on your computer and access your files.
Turn Off File Sharing
The first line of defense against unauthorized access is to
disable remote file sharing, a feature that grants others access
to your computer's data across a network connection. The instructions
for doing this are different depending on your operating system.
Please choose which operating system you use:
Install a Firewall
To add another level of security, use a personal firewall.
A firewall is like a one-way valve that lets you access the
Internet, but helps prevent the Internet from accessing you.
The firewall helps mask from the Internet the information and
activity that is on your side of the modem. Firewall software
can also alert you if anyone tries to break through that wall
to access your computer.
Windows XP has a built-in firewall you can use to help protect
your computer against intruders.
Or you could use this free
download from Zone
